Lyuben Karvelov university of Sofia is one of the specialized universities of Bulgaria, working in the field of Architecture and Civil engineering. This university was not always a university specialized in Civil engineering, however, at first, it was a part of the greater military engineering university of Sofia. Military engineering university was established in 1938, by the direct order of Tsar Boris the third. It has witnessed a lot of important historical events and experienced many changes in its long history, and since the year 2000, has been called a state university, and operates as a specialized higher education center.

The university is one of the best civil engineering schools in the region.
